Predator 2024 - Football Tracker

Client:

Adidas

Project Type: Hardware and Unity Development

In late 2023 the wider agency wanted to pitch in a interactive football game that was set in a stolen van from the campaign video. The client was keen on range of behaviours for in store events and customer facing try ones, which would include a digital score board crossed LEDs and sensors. The project would need to be built over the course of 6 weeks for the early Jan 2024 install date, and be in place for around 3 months. The project itself was based around IR sensors connected the a central microcontroller that would update a unity app running all the visuals and tracking the games.

After testing a range of sensors, I 3d printed some housing for the IR sensors that would trigger when a ball passes nearby, and would be fixed inside the van near the entry ways to sense the balls. At which point the central microcontroller would trigger two behaviours; one it would send an score ID value to my bespoke unity app, and secondly trigger a Relay for the LED ring around the cut outs in the van. The unity app was a simple 2d app that would take the ID of score, then apply either +1, +2,+3 based on the value the client wanted for each of the holes in the Van.

After Install

After a few weeks of abuse, the popularity of the unit was clear and some of the physical build and tec was showing signed of ware. Eventually we swapped the unit to work with a redundancy solution I developed as back up for events, where staff could manually add and take away score using a wireless number pad they had in the hands. This allowed the team managing the unit have greater control of the score board and reward younger players with higher scores when the activation was running in day to day store mode.
