FurtherSpace VR / AR Tool
Client:
Furtherspace
Project Type: VR, AR, Unity Development, 3D Modelling
In 2021, we won some work for a glamping pod company called Furtherspace, their business was around approaching landowners with these prebuild pods that would be fitted with plumbing, electric and space for 2 adults and 2 children on site, where they could split the profits on land usage. Furtherspace themselves was after a b2b Virtual reality tool that they could used on both trade shows and on site with possible landowners.
Due to the scale of the business at the time, they didn’t have fully furnished models of the Pods, just a CAD model of the exterior and interior shells. I would therefore need to model all the furnishing inside the pod as well as grab texture and material references to start 3d modelling the site from scratch. Thanks to Furtherspace I was able to stay on site for a few nights as I took extensive photography and HDRIs to help me model up the pod.
3D Modelling
Once back from the site visit, I use the CAD model of the exterior to start blocking out the space using some measurements I took while there. After around a day ,I had the entire space mapped out, which I then box UV mapped and took to Unity HDRP before texturing. This was because I knew the final output would need to run smoothly and optimally so I did my early texting with a blank model on a sample terrain map.
After a couple of days of making textures and sourcing fixtures and fittings from online stores, I could finally finish the model off and start working on the experience. As a B2B trade show tool, It was important the design was engaging but limited the amount a user could do to ensure that users wouldn’t get lost of need lots of on boarding on the trade show floor. There I simple used the default VR toolkit point and shoot movement , with VR buttons in the space that would allow the user to use the bed , open door and turn on and off light.

Outcome
The team at Furtherspace was impress by the model for weeks’ worth of work and requested that we additional build a small environment video for it as well as a AR version is possible. Thanks to the already very optimised model, by simply dropping in Unity URP pipelines I was able to use the same file to build a basic AR version that the team could used on location to plan out sites with landowners.
